Emap launches The Hits radio for Glasgow

LONDON - Emap Performance is planning to bid for the new Glasgow commercial FM radio licence and, to kickstart its application, it will launch a month-long, Glasgow-based trial radio service called The Hits.

Emap Performance, part of media group Emap, already has 18 radio stations including London-based youth station Kiss.

Alongside the trial service, which is known as a restricted service licence, Emap is launching a research project to find exactly where the gaps are in the current commercial radio market. One of the aims of the research will be to discover exactly what sort of music Glaswegians would like to be tuning into.

The Hits, which is based on the TV channel currently available on digital terestrial via Freeview, will broadcast from Carver Studios in the heart of Glasgow from Tuesday November 26 to Friday December 20.

According to Emap, initial research has shown that people are looking for a new station that plays mainstream music by day and specialist music at night. The Hits will combine elements of other Emap radio formats including Friday Night Kiss (old school dance music), the Smash Hits chart and specialist rock shows under its Kerrang! banner, together with local news and reviews.

Tim Schoonmaker, Emap Performance chief executive, said: "I think that a broadly-based radio station which includes Kiss, Kerrang!, and Smash Hits music could be a great addition to radio choice in Glasgow."
