Emap gets approval for its £375m sale of French arm

LONDON - Emap has completed the £375m sale of its French consumer magazines division, Emap France, to Italian publishing group Arnoldo Mondadori Editore having received European regulatory clearance.

The sale, completed in June, means that Mondadori will take control of around 50 magazines including French versions of FHM, Closer, Top Sante, Sport Auto and several science, nature and hobby titles.

Mondadori is a media group owned by former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi. The group owns 50% stakes in Italian offshoots of international magazine publishers Gruner & Jahr, Hearst and Rodale. Its other activities include book publishing, printing and radio.

The deal is now subject to certain shareholder approvals, which will be obtained at an extraordinary general meeting on September 25.

Emap is proposing to return £192m of the sale proceeds in cash to shareholders. The balance of the sale will be used for reinvested to support the delivery of the group's strategy.
