Emap Active is claiming Today’s Golfer is outselling IPC’s Golf
Monthly on newsstands by more than two to one following the merger of
Today’s Golfer with Emap’s Fore! magazine.
Advertisement manager Dave Page said that since the magazines had
merged, Today’s Golfer had also attracted new advertisers, including
Nike, Oakley, Carnegie Club, Cleveland and Adams.
The April issue - published before the merger - carried 50 pages of
advertising.
The post-merger May issue carried 75.
Publisher David Clarke said the May issue sold 86,557 copies from
newsstands out of a distribution of 120,000.
This would suggest most Fore! readers have decided to buy the merged
title. The combined UK newsstand sale of Today’s Golfer and Fore! before
the merger was 90,753, according to the July to December ABCs.
Golf Monthly’s total ABC was 72,069 but only 35,474 of these were sold
on UK newsstands. Of the remainder, 8,730 were sold overseas and 12,000
were sold to British Airways in a bulk deal.
Golf Monthly editor Jane Carter responded: ’We expected Today’s Golfer’s
first result to be impressive because Emap has distributed a lot of
copies and promoted the magazine heavily.
’We’ll wait and see what the next three issues sell. We hope to attract
some disaffected Fore! readers.’
Carter added: ’We’re doing well and expect our next ABC to be around
75,000.’
