The appointment is made as part of a major expansion programme by Screen Digest, which publishes large-scale management reports about the European and global entertainment media business.
According to Elstein: "In 30 years, Screen Digest has built an enviable reputation as one of the most authoritative sources of information about the audio-visual industries, and the opportunities to exploit that reputation in the digital age are very attractive."
Screen Digest has now expanded into online research services, making all the data in its reports and other Screen Digest databases available to clients through a series of intelligence services covering television and broadband, video and DVD, computer games and cinema.
Allan Hardy, managing director of Screen Digest, said: "David Elstein's outstanding abilities and deep understanding of the industries we serve will be of enormous value to the development of our business."
Screen Digest is a primarily a research company and Screen Digest, the magazine, has been published for 30 years and is read in more than 40 countries.
Elstein adds the new role to a growing list of non-executive roles, including chairman of the British Screen Advisory Council, Really Useful Theatres and the National Film and Television School Foundation. He is also a non-executive director of Sport and Leisure, NTL, Kingsbridge Capital and, in addition, he is a visiting professor at the Universities of Stirling and Westminster.
He was chief executive of Channel 5 from 1996 to 2000. Prior to that, he was head of programming at BSkyB from 1992 to 1996, and director of programmes at Thames TV from 1986 to 1992.
