Electoral Roll reveals final opt-out

The latest Electoral Roll, comprising data from all 463 local authorities, is in, and it confirms that opt-out is at 29 per cent - up two percentage points on last year.

The data, available from Experian, reveals 44.7 million people are registered to vote, up 474,933 on last year's roll. It also reveals changes in the composition of the population.

Some 5.8 million people moved house in 2004, 13 per cent of UK households.

London and the South-East showed the highest proportion of moves at 14.55 per cent, followed by the West Midlands and Wales & the South West. Scotland showed the smallest proportion, 10.92 per cent.

Steve Kilmister, managing director at Experian's consumer business, said: "The sheer number of people moving illustrates how important it is for the financial services industry to have access to the most accurate information. This is especially so when authenticating people's identities and eradicating fraud."

The latest rolling register information for 2005 is also available. Experian has already received 85 per cent of this information for January 2005.
