Led by Intellect, the IT industry's trade association and advisory organisation, and the Broadband Stakeholder Group, the media and technology groups are specifically challenging the EC's Television without Frontiers directive.
They claim the directive, which proposes extending the current regulation of television into these new areas, will stifle innovation and fail to protect consumers. Instead, they are arguing there should be self-regulation for new media.
Anthony Walker, Broadband Stakeholder Group chief executive, told the Financial Times: "We agree with all the objectives of the directive, but we just think this is the wrong way to go about it."
The paper also says that media regulator Ofcom is supporting the campaign.
The directive is now being looked at by the European Parliament with a final vote expected at the end of the year.
