EchoStar wins 1m additional customers

LONDON - EchoStar, the second-largest satellite TV provider in the US, has added 1m subscribers in the last seven months bringing its total customer base to 6m.

The broadcaster has been signing up customers at a faster rate than that of its larger rival DirecTV, a unit of General Motors-owned Hughes Electronics.

However, even with the new customers EchoStar is still a long way behind DirecTV's 9.8m customers.

EchoStar is currently in a battle with Rupert Murdoch for control of DirecTV. Murdoch, whose News Corporation has been stalking DirecTV for months, wants to merge it into Sky Global Networks, parent of BSkyB and Star TV.
