The BBC One soap's audience peaked at 10.9m at 8pm, as viewers flocked to the programme to find out whether Sean would ruin the special day and tell all about his sister's secret affair.
ITV1 rival 'Emmerdale' averaged 6.4m viewers and a 29.9% share in the 7pm-8pm slot.
The second part of Channel 4's two-part drama about British-born Muslims and their attitudes to political action, 'Britz', was an improvement on the previous night's audience, drawing an average 1.4m viewers and a viewing share of 8% between 9pm and 11.30pm.
Although the programme could not rival BBC One drama series 'Waterloo Road', which averaged 5.3m between 8.30pm and 9.30pm and a 24% share, a Channel 4 spokesman said the channel was pleased with "a fantastic performance for what is a very challenging piece of drama".
'Californication', Five's US drama starring David Duchovny, managed 700,000 viewers in the 10pm slot, giving it a 3.7% share.
