Dutch soccer clubs take Sony to court over trademark rights

LONDON - Leading Dutch soccer clubs Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord are taking Sony to court, claiming a new game for its PlayStation console infringes the clubs' trademark rights.

The clubs will ask a court in The Hague on August 15 to order Sony to withdraw its "This is Football 2002" game from the shelves and stop next month's launch of a 2003 version in the Netherlands.

A lawyer for the clubs told Reuters that the clubs have an agreement with Sony's rival U.S. Electronic Arts to feature their teams in its games. The Sony game also depicts sponsor logos of companies in competition with the Dutch clubs' own partners.

The clubs' lawyers maintain Sony's agreement with the professional soccer players association FIFPRO to feature likenesses of players in its video games does not give it the right to show the Dutch clubs' stars.

PSV was founded as a sports club in 1913 for the employees of its main sponsor, Dutch consumer electronics leaders Philips, a major rival of Sony.
