Durex Play Ogel TV commercial slips past watchdog

LONDON - Channel 4's premature showing of a Durex Play O gel ad, showing women in the throes of pleasure, escaped without action from the ASA after it investigated two complaints.

The complainants were offended by the ad, which showed the women appearing to be sing opera, and closed with a voiceover saying: "Feel like never before. Durex Play O. Pleasure-enhancing gel for women."

The Advertising Standards Authority decided the ad was unlikely to cause offence, but was worried about Channel 4 showing the ad before the post-11pm scheduling restriction applied by Clearcast.

Channel 4, which put the ad on shortly after 10pm in 'Gordon Ramsay's F Word' and after 10.30pm in 'Derren Brown Presents', argued that viewers of both programmes would not be offended by the ad.

Having accepted from the audience-index figures supplied by the broadcaster that neither programme demonstrated a particular appeal to younger children, the ASA gave Channel 4 and the ad the all-clear.

The ad was created by The TV Department.
