Durex dishes out three million free condoms to raise awareness of sexually transmitted Zika

Durex has teamed up with global charity group International Planned Parenthood Federation to launch #DontShareZika, a video campaign to educate people about the virus' status as a sexually transmitted infection.

As part of the drive, the RB brand will give away three million free condoms in Brazil, which has had 66,000 confirmed and 165,000 suspected cases of Zika in the epidemic that has led some athletes to withdraw from the Olympics.

The campaign video was created in-house by Durex, with the concept and storyboarding done by the brand's global PR agency Premier.

Studies in recent months have found that Zika can spread between humans via sexual contact, and the World Health Organisation has now confirmed that this is the case. This means that anyone, including those in a monogamous relationship, could be at risk if either they or their partner have visited an affected area.

The WHO has recommended that people returning from areas with Zika, including Brazil, should practice safe sex for at least eight weeks after returning, even if they don’t have any symptoms.

#DontShareZika follows Durex’s campaign for the creation of a condom emoji around World Aids Day last autumn.

Durex global brand director Volker Sydow said: "As the world’s number one sexual wellbeing brand we have a responsibility to make people aware of this STI, to help people to stay healthy and to prevent the sexual transmission of the virus."
