Dung beetles more popular than celebs at primetime

Endangered wildlife in Bhutan was more of a hit with TV viewers than not-so-endangered celebs in the Arctic during the 9pm to 10pm slot last night, according to unofficial overnight figures.

The first episode of ‘Lost Land of the Tiger’, in which the dung beetle was uncovered by scientists searching for the big cats, raised an average audience of 5.03 million across BBC One and BBC HD, an estimated 21.5% share of the TV watching audience.

The third episode of ‘71 Degrees North’, an 'I’m a Celeb'-type show set in freezing temperatures, was watched by an average of 3.4 million people between 9pm and 10pm, a 14.5% share of the TV watching audience.

Last night’s ‘71 Degrees North’ audience was ahead of last Tuesday’s (14 September) audience of 2.97 million but behind the launch episode's 4.82 million (11 September). Celebs taking part in the series include Gavin Henson, the Welsh rugby player, Diarmuid Gavin, the gardening presenter, and Michelle Mone, a lingerie entrepreneur.

‘CSI Miami’ on Channel Five had an average audience of 2.08 million between 9pm and 10pm, an 8.9% share of the TV watching audience, ahead of Channel 4’s ‘Ramsay's Best Restaurant’ with 1.73 million between 9pm and 10pm, a 7.4% share.

The penultimate episode of Shane Meadows’ ‘This is England ‘86’ managed an audience of 2.06 million on Channel 4 between 10pm and 11pm, an 11.9% share. An additional 406,300 watched the show on Channel 4+1.
