Drying income streams blamed for 100 newspaper job losses

LONDON - Two regional newspaper owners initiated a collective 100 job cuts at their titles, including The Herald in Glasgow and Manchester Evening News, in reaction to the drying-up of their traditional revenue streams.

Journalists bore the brunt of the cuts at the Manchester Evening News, which is reducing the editorial workforce by a fifth. The Guardian Media Group-owned company has given one week's notice for voluntary redundancy to 27 journalists and eight clerical staff.

Mark Dodson, the chief executive of GMG's regional division, said the paper faced one of the most challenging periods in its history.

"There has been an economic and structural shift in its income streams and the business has to fundamentally change if it is to thrive in a digital future," he said.

At Newsquest, staff numbers on three Glasgow-based papers are to be reduced by between 60 and 70, while jobs were unaffected at the Scottish magazine and internet divisions.

Newsquest has started a month-long consultation period with all departments on two of Scotland's national newspaper titles The Herald and its sister Sunday Herald, as well as the Evening Times in Glasgow.

In his announcement to staff Tim Lott, the Scottish division's managing director, said the papers performed well in the first half of 2005, but are now experiencing significant shortfalls in classified revenues with little prospect of immediate recovery.

"Our company has held off considering reductions in staffing for as long as possible but must reluctantly restructure the underlying cost base to protect the future strength of the business," he said.
