Dr Pepper launches latest cringeworthy spot for teenagers

LONDON - Dr Pepper this week continued its 'What's the worst that could happen?' campaign with a new spot, which again picks up on the embarrassments of teenage life it began with its previous 'butt-naked kid' commercial.

The advertisement, created by Mother and called "tissue", is set in the familar environs of an American high school. A cheerleader approaches a male sports star student and offers to let him taste her Dr Pepper, asking him: "What's the worst that could happen?"

The boy sips the drink, but gags as he notices the cheerleader's fulsome bust. He spies a tissue poking out of her top but, as he grabs it to wipe his mouth, the tissue keeps coming out, revealing that the cheerleader is, in fact, flat chested.

Directed by Bryan Buckley, the ad was shot on location in New York and features an American cast. It will be shown on television until September as part of a campaign that will also include cinema and radio ads.

Previous Dr Pepper ads "butt-naked kid" and "over-friendly father", which include similar cringing-teen scenarios, will also continue to be screened.

Judith Levey, Coca-Cola brand PR manager, said: "The Dr Pepper 'What's the worst that could happen?' advertising has resonated strongly with target teens. This has led us to step up the pace on the brand and really push on activity in 2002. The situations in the advertising invoke a 'thank goodness that wasn't me' reaction from teens who see their worst nightmares unfolding on screen."
