House, who is currently president of the company's international operations, joined the Journal in 1974 as a reporter in Washington DC. She was named foreign editor of the Journal in 1984, the same year she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for international reporting for her coverage of the Middle East.
She will report to Richard F Zannino, who has been promoted to chief operating officer from his role as executive vice-president and chief financial officer.
Zannino will report to chairman and CEO Peter Kann, who is married to House, as will Peter Skinner, who retains his role as general counsel.
House, who used to report to Skinner, now reports to Zannino.
Kann also announced a new executive committee of managers, including Zannino, House and Skinner. They are joined by L Gordon Crovitz, who retains his role as senior vice-president of Dow Jones electronic publishing operations; James Ottaway Jr, senior vice-president of the company and chairman and CEO of Ottaway Newspapers.
The line-up is completed by Paul E Steiger, who continues in his role as managing editor of the Wall Street Journal.
Kann said: "Today's announcement should substantially enhance our ability to run Dow Jones even more effectively and efficiently. First, I'm very pleased that Rich Zannino will become my partner as chief operating officer of our company. Next, I think the new global organisational structure of all print editions of The Wall Street Journal will play to the Journal's strength as the global business daily, and help us build on that strength."
