Mohan, currently deputy editor of The Sun, will replace Rebekah Brooks, (formerly Wade), when she takes up her new role as chief executive of News International on 2 September.

James Murdoch, chairman and chief executive, Europe and Asia, News Corporation, said Mohan has proved himself a very capable deputy to Rebekah, "sharing her passion for campaigning journalism on the issues that connect with the country".

Mohan has worked on the Sun for 13 years. Prior to becoming deputy editor in 2007 he was associate editor for three years and assistant editor for two years before that.

He joined The Sun to work on Bizarre, the showbiz column, in 1996 and edited the column for five years from 1998. Before starting at The Sun, Mohan was a reporter on its sister Sunday title The News of the World.
