DoH launches 'Scared' anti-smoking ad campaign

LONDON - The Department of Health is launching a powerful stop smoking TV ad tonight, featuring the voiceover of a young child who is scared about her mum dying due to smoking.

The ad is part of a nationwide campaign created by Miles Calcraft Briginshaw Duffy. It opens on a darkened child's bedroom, while the young girl is heard saying: "I'm not scared of the dark".

It then cuts through a series of other images, such as a crawling spider and the leering face of a clown, with the young girl saying: "I'm not scared of spiders", "I'm not scared of clowns".

The 30-second spot ends with a group of young mums who are chatting together and smoking as the girl says: "I'm scared of my mum smoking." One of the mums turns and smiles at the camera and the girl says: "I'm scared that my mum will die."

It finishes with the tagline: "Over 2,000 people die every week in the UK from smoking-related diseases", followed by a phone number for the NHS Smoking Helpline.

The ad will be timed to air in the early evening when both parents and their children are most likely to be watching together.

It will be accompanied by an outdoor campaign featuring posters that carry a similar message.
