DMGT makes knockout Daily Telegraph bid near £700m

LONDON – The Daily Mail & General Trust is being reported this morning to have made a knockout bid close to £700m for the Telegraph Group, which would allow it to sit The Daily Telegraph alongside its existing conservative title, the Daily Mail.

The Times is reporting that DMGT is in pole position in the long-running race to win control of The Daily Telegraph, Sunday Telegraph and The Spectator magazine.

Earlier this week, DMGT finance director Peter Williams confirmed that the publisher was still in the bidding process.

"Our position remains exactly as it's always been. We are interested in this asset and we openly admit we are still involved," Williams said.

The Times quoted a senior source close to Hollinger International saying that Lord Rothermere was close to clinching control of the Telegraph Group.

If DMGT wins the battle, its bid will be referred by Patricia Hewitt, the trade and industry secretary to the Office of Fair Trading on competition grounds and possibly to Ofcom as well.

If DMGT wins, it will dash the hopes of the billionaire Barclay brothers who were once seen as the front runners in the race. The Daily Mail publisher will also see off competition from venture capital firm 3i.
