Kay takes over immediately from Deborah Wroe, who has joined the Australian DMA.
Based in Manchester, Kay will be responsible for supporting the 130 DMA members based in the north of England through coordinating training and development courses, as well as networking and social events.
She will also play a crucial role in the regional implementation of the DMA's nationwide programmes, such as PAS 2020, the first environmental standard to be developed for the direct marketing industry.
Kay has 10 years' experience working in the direct marketing industry both on the agency and client side.
Her career includes working at one of the North's largest mail-order companies, running her own fashion photography agency and her most recent role as the marketing manager for a young IT firm.
Kay said: "Even though the North is home to a wealth of creative and marketing talent, successful DM practitioners and service providers, the current economic climate is proving tough for many firms.
"I will be responsible for ensuring that members utilise the full range of benefits that the DMA offers to win business, retain clients, and develop staff to keep a competitive edge."
Mike Barnes, director of marketing and development for the DMA, said: "Suzanne joins us with a wide breadth of experience in many sectors of the DM industry in the North.
"Her local knowledge and her experience means that the DMA's north of England members will be looked after by expert hands. I look forward to working with her as we continue to promote the interests of the direct marketing industry."
