DMA announces winners of first Young DM Awards

LONDON - Pupils from three UK secondary schools have been selected as winners of the 2006 Young Direct Marketing Awards, the industry's first national competition to find future marketers.

Teams from Bradford Girl's Grammar School, St Michael's RC School in Billingham and London's The Mount School, were chosen from 12 other regional winners and over 200 entries nationwide, and will now have their winning entries turned into a live DM campaign.

The ceremony, which was held in London on Friday, recognises direct marketing campaigns designed to be implemented in local communities on the behalf of The Woodlands Trust, PDSA and MacMillan Cancer Support.

The YDMA's were launched in January to aid students aged 11-15 in gaining first-hand experience of the DM industry and its creative and business marketing principles.

The DMA chose The Woodlands Trust, PDSA and MacMillan Cancer Research, because of their use of DM campaigning to raise funds, and because the winning student's ideas would eventually be used for demonstrably worthwhile causes.

A winner was chosen for each charity by a panel of judges made up from professionals in the DM industry and a representative from each charity involved in the competition.

Mike Barnes, director of marketing and business development at the DMA, said: "The winning teams can feel proud of themselves for being crowned the first ever YDMA national winners and the excitement is only just beginning.

"They now get to see their campaign become a reality in their local area and we'll look forward to seeing some of these budding marketers enter the industry in the future."
