Disney ventures into UK radio

Despite its highbrow status the Financial Times is considered less intellectual than The X-Files and Stargate SG1, according to the first wave of results from MediaDNA, the research consortium set up by Zenith Media, BSkyB, Capital Radio and News International to define the personality behind media brands.

Capital Radio has joined forces with The Walt Disney company to launch a co-branded digital kids radio network in the UK.

The new network, which will be called Capital Disney, will use Disney's content and will broadcast on Capital's Cube digital radio stations, covering 50% of the UK.

The playlist, concentrating on pop and teen bands, will be controlled by Capital and the network will launch in the next few months.

The network will also use other media platforms including mobile phones and the internet to launch a multi-media service.

Capital believes that the target audience for the service, namely the technology-literate under-16s will be a major force in the take-up of digital radio in the UK.

Capital Radio chief executive David Mansfield said: "This alliance will help us achieve two of our long-term aims: building the UK's leading children's radio network and establishing digital radio as mainstream medium."
