Disney launches Baby Einstein in Mothercare deal

Disney is attempting to repeat its US success with infant entertainment brand Baby Einstein on the UK high street, after striking a distribution deal with Mothercare.

It will be the first time a non-Disney-branded property has been promoted by Disney in the UK and marks a sea change in the way the corporation markets entertainment franchises.

Baby Einstein is a range of books and videos that introduce art, music and foreign languages to babies.

It has proven a massive hit in the US, representing nine out of ten videos for infants sold, and is branching out into apparel and toys.

The UK range, which includes a Baby Mozart classical music CD and Language Nursery DVD, goes into 170 Mothercare stores this week, rolling out to all 250 stores by October.

Disney is in discussion with Mothercare over themed in-store zones featuring DVD screens.

Disney bought the concept for £16m from creator Julie Aigner-Clark in 2001.
