Directgov makes local information available for mobile

London - Directgov, the government website that provides access to public services online, has launched a mobile version of the system.

The new mobile service, available at , allows users to enter a postcode to search for local information which includes solicitors, councils and careers and learning advice via the learndirect advice line.

Launched in 2004, the Directgov web portal currently receives 2.7m visitors a month. It became part of the COI in April, having previously been managed by the Cabinet Office. It has an operational budget of 拢5m a year.

The site is available on all mobile platforms and from early next year a high-end 3G version will be launched, which will look sharper when accessed.

Alex Butler, Directgov's strategy and marketing director, said: "People can now rely on Directgov for quick and easy access to information on a range of local services while on the move. Research shows this is what the public expects and we are able to meet this demand through joined-up government working, using mobile and the web.

"Making the site available via mobile phones is part of our mission to develop the Directgov offer and put public services and information all in one place."

Interactive content provider Cimex has developed the mobile service for Directgov.
