Sustrans, the charity that encourages people to use public transport rather than private vehicles, has appointed Entire to handle its direct marketing account.

The Bristol-based agency's brief is to increase Sustrans' supporter base of 40,000 and encourage existing members to become more active.

Entire, which won the business after a five-way pitch, will develop Sustrans' recruitment strategy for 2001. The charity's flagship projects are the 5000-mile National Cycle Network and Safe Routes to School. Entire, which launched last year, will handle all creative and media elements of the project.

'Our 40,000 supporters provide our financial foundation and our mandate to work with hundreds of local communities across the UK,' said Sustrans fundraising and development director Tim Snowdon. 'Attracting new supporters into our organisation is critical in terms of bringing about sustainable transport changes.'

Sustrans aims to double the length of the cycle network within five years.
