DIRECT BRIEFS: Direct Mail set records for volume and spend 2001

The Direct Mail Information Service has reported that direct mail

set records for volume and spend in 2001, rising on a strong fourth

quarter. Volume was up by 5.9% year on year, with expenditure up 8.7%.

The organisation found that 4.9 billion DM items were mailed last year.

In sector analysis, volume growth leaders included the insurance

industry, up 13.6% with 399 million items mailed, and the home shopping

sector, up 6.9% with 504 million items mailed. Mailings to the AB

demographic fell by 9.5% for the year, while those to DEs rose by 22.3%.
