Digital TV penetration climbs above 80%

LONDON - The percentage of households with digital television rose from 77.3% to 80.5% during the first quarter of 2007, according to Ofcom.

Ofcom's figures show there were nearly 870,000 net UK household conversions to digital television, compared with 1m conversions in the fourth quarter of 2006.

There are now more than 20.4m households in the UK with digital TV equipment connected to their main television.

Freeview-only conversions numbered 670,000, taking the total number of Freeview-only homes to 8.37m.

This is just behind Sky's 8.49m customers, although Freeview recently argued it is leading when Sky's Republic of Ireland customers are discounted.

Ofcom estimates that there are around 885,000 free-to-view digital satellite homes, which brings the total number of free-to-view digital households to 9.3m.
