Digital takes off as Freeview sales pass 300,000

LONDON - Free-to-air digital terrestrial TV service Freeview has shifted more than 300,000 of its digital terrestrial adapters in the two months since its launch.

Over the same period, almost 2m requests were received for information on the DTT platform.

The news follows yesterday's announcement that Granada and Carlton Communications will pay for former ITV Digital customers to keep their set-top boxes -- ITV Digital's liquidators had demanded that former customers buy the boxes for £39.99.

With the new Freeview customers and the former ITV Digital subscribers combined, the penetration of DTT is now more than 1.3m households.

Andy Duncan, BBC director of marketing and communications, said, "Of course, it's still early days for the launch of Freeview, but these figures show there's undoubtedly a major opportunity out there for the idea of simple, free digital television."

Freeview, a venture between the BBC, Sky and transmisssion business Crown Castle, launched on October 30.
