Diary: Suits not welcome

Carl Johnson, Anomaly's co-founder, has a unique way of dealing with his paymasters - he doesn't let them into his building.

Apparently, executives at MDC Partners are not welcome at Anomaly towers as Johnson feels their presence might give staff the impression that he’s about to leave or be replaced. That said, word has reached Diary that he’s willing to let MDC’s new head, Scott Kauffman, pay a visit – but only if he comes on a Sunday.

Who’s up for a game of musical chairs?

Robert Senior, Johnny Hornby and Moray MacLennan are three of the most senior people in UK advertising – but they don’t always act like it. When the Royal Bank of Scotland Group’s chief executive, Ross McEwan, agreed to attend a Marketing Group of Great Britain dinner last month, Senior, the MGGB president, arranged for McEwan to sit between himself and Hornby. Because Hornby’s always good for a laugh and because Senior is, well, senior. Unhappy at being shunted to the far end of the table, MacLennan sneaked in before the meal and switched around the name tags, sitting himself next to McEwan – a key client for his agency. With witty banter like that, the trio should have their own show on Dave.

Hollywood beckons

Hot on the heels of his involvement in Attacking The Devil, the documentary about the thalidomide scandal, Trevor Beattie has squeezed in a new film project alongside the follow-up to Moon with Duncan Jones and a documentary on the ballet star Rudolf Nureyev. BMB’s chairman is partnering with Eddie Izzard for his new movie – a period drama with the cryptic working title of "#NazisByTheSeaside". The plan for the movie is being unveiled – appropriately – in Berlin today (Thursday) at its film festival.

Mel Edwards, Wunderman’s chief executive, being bombarded with balloons during the agency’s Woo Week – which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like.

Mark Fiddes points out how much Jack Black in the Goosebumps film looks like a younger Sir Martin Sorrell. Chilling, indeed.

Yannick Bolloré, the chief executive of Havas, makes a rather sombre industrialist in this tribute picture to Charles Havas, who created the group 180 years ago.
