Diary: Drum and dumber

The Wieden & Kennedy Amsterdam creative director Sean Condon is "very proud" of his agency's "wing everything" campaign for Booking.com.

Condon particularly likes the soundtrack, saying: "The last time I heard an awesome jazz-fusion drum solo as the anchor of a brand film was… never." We’re not sure if this is the famous W&K sense of humour, but the last time Diary heard a jazz drum solo in an ad was just three months ago in the "freestyle" spot for Lurpak, which was made by… W&K’s London office.

Going postal

Mcgarrybowen London lists direct marketing and CRM among the company’s specialisms on its website but was powerless to prevent a howler when mailing its own agency newsletter to clients and journalists. Rick Hirst, the chief executive, sent an e-mail to recipients apologising for the mistake with the postage, which meant that people would have had to pay to receive the promotional package. Hirst explained the blunder was "out of our control" and, as a gesture of goodwill, said the agency had donated £500 to the charity Shelter. He finished the e-mail by saying: "The Q3 mailer is in the studio at the moment. This time I’m contemplating hand-delivering it myself."

Adland’s fallen

Liver damage, frequent trips to the clinic, an eroded septum… working in adland used to bring with it a host of occupational hazards. But it seems that the start of summer has precipitated a new one: damaged feet. First it was Publicis’ Guy Wienyk, who sprained his ankle in Cannes. Then it was the turn of Engine’s chief executive, Debbie Klein, who broke hers on the way to the House Festival. And, for those who wondered whether James Murphy had an Achilles’ heel, we can report he does – because he tore it while running a dads’ race at his child’s sports day. The Adam & Eve/DDB boss has been a little shy about admitting that, though.
