DIARY: BBH risks a sleep with the fishes filming the Johnnie Walker shoot

If you're looking for mafioso actors, New York is the place to go. So thought Bartle Bogle Hegarty when it went on a Mafia search for a recent Johnnie Walker shoot. And who should they find but Goodfellas-style characters such as "New York

Joe and Vinny Vella Senior, who downed their glocks and knives to be in the spot.

Neil Dawson, BBH's creative director on the ad, says the nattily-attired ones attracted a lot of attention: "They were real local celebrities." But were they imposing, or do they just ham it up for the cameras? "One of them was scary,

Dawson, braver now he's back in England, confirms.

And did the ominous presence of the Mob make itself felt on the shoot?

"The only trouble we had was with old Italian grandmas,

Dawson recounts.

But we're not talking our bridge-playing Miss Marples here; this lot could have eaten the crew for breakfast. And they had to pack up the shoot quickly, before the wrathful granny Corleone and her pals called upon their doting grandsons to remove the irritants.
