The £10.6bn bid could see LVMH's Krug, Dom Perignon and Moet & Chandon brands united with Diageo's Guinness, Smirnoff and Baileys.
An insider said that the deal would allow LVMH to buy Hermes and concentrate on fashion and luxury goods. Hermes would fit with LVMH's existing fashion portfolio, which includes Louis Vuitton, Fendi, Donna Karen and Marc Jacobs.
Diageo already owns a one-third stake in LVMH's wine and spirits division Moet Hennessy.
Diageo was unavailable to comment.
