Dawn Jackson, marketing director at Leisure Connection, which manages facilities on behalf of local authorities and organisations such as Sport England, has been hired as director of membership and marketing. Her responsibilities include marketing, corporate and community fundraising and supporter relations.
Jackson's role has been created following a restructure of the charity.
Director of policy and communications Benet Middleton, who previously oversaw awareness marketing, is now acting chief executive. Director of fundraising Jonathan Parris, who headed giving and membership marketing, left the charity earlier this year.
Jackson, who spent six years at the British Nursing Association as marketing manager and marketing director prior to Leisure Connection, said her main challenges are to raise awareness of the charity among diabetes sufferers and healthcare professionals, market its services more effectively and boost membership.
There are 1.4 million people in the UK diagnosed with the condition and an estimated further million who do not know they are sufferers.
Diabetes UK's marketing is primarily through healthcare professionals.
However, it also forms partnerships with commercial organisations.
It has linked with Lloydspharmacy, for example, to pilot a diabetes testing scheme in Scotland. If successful, the scheme could be rolled out across the rest of the UK.
