DfES to take on cyber-bullying

The government is seeking to alleviate the problem of teen 'cyber-bullying' with an awareness campaign.

The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) has appointed Profero as the lead strategic agency on a project to curb the number of school children being harassed via mobile phones, online social networks, blogs and email.

Plans for the campaign are still at an early stage, but activity will break later this year spanning lifestyle sites, portals and social networks.

Research by MSN found that one in 10 UK teenagers has been a victim of cyber-bullying, while one in 20 admits to bullying others via digital devices, yet almost half of UK parents are not aware of the phenomenon.

A third of teens use an instant-messaging service several times a day and more than a quarter access a blog at least once a week.
