Desperate Housewives sparks rush of Hollywood stars to new TV shows

LONDON - Hoping to replicate the success of HBO's 'Desperate Housewives', Hollywood A-listers including Denise Richards, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Rosanna Arquette are signing up to star in rival networks' TV series.

Richards, who is married to Charlie Sheen currently starring in 'Two and a Half Men', is set to appear in a UPN drama series called 'Wildlife' about a group of twentysomethings living in the hip Hollywood community of Silverlake.

Love Hewitt, who has previously starred 'Heartbreakers' and two 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' movies as well as long-running TV series 'Party of Five', has been tipped to star in a CBS drama pilot about a newlywed who communicates with the dead, provisionally called 'Ghost Whisperer'.

'Pulp Fiction' actress Rosanna Arquette is lined up to star as the older sister in the ABC drama 'What about Brian', with 'Sorority Boys' actor Barry Watson playing her brother.

'Dawson's Creek' lead James Van Der Beek will be taking a starring role in new comedy series 'Three', despite successfully making the transition from soap to Hollywood with feature films 'The Rules of Attraction' and 'Varsity Blues'.

'Three', to be made by the Paramount Network, stars Van Der Beek as a newlywed husband who wants to spend time with his wife while finding time to entertain his recently divorced male best friend.

The recent surge in actors turning their backs on Hollywood to take up TV can be linked to the recent popularity of HBO hit 'Desperate Housewives', which launched in the US last October and in the UK in January, with rave reviews from viewers and critics on both sides of the pond.

'Desperate Housewives' has averaged 5.5m viewers since its launch on Channel 4 and is one of the channel's highest rated shows, regularly beating ratings-puller 'Big Brother' and almost as successful as 'Friends'.

Five recently bought 'Friends' spin-off 'Joey' starring Matt Le Blanc and Charlie Sheen-fronted comedy 'Two and a Half Men' as part of a £10m deal with Warner Bros Television. The opening episode of 'Joey' attracted 4.8m viewers to the channel, the higest ever for a non-movie or sporting event.
