Desmond quiet on Chrysalis radio talks

LONDON - Northern & Shell, the Richard Desmond-run company which owns Express Newspapers, has refused to comment on reports that it is trying to buy Chrysalis's radio assets, including Heart FM.

Desmond is understood to have held informal talks two weeks ago with Chrysalis chairman Chris Wright, but was told the stations were not for sale.

Desmond, who bought Express Newspapers in November 2000, turned his attention to radio and TV last summer after he was offered £1bn of finance by Commerzbank, which helped fund his initial purchase of Express.

Ever since Desmond took over Express he has been trying shake off his image as a porn baron by trying to sell his adult magazines and strengthen his position as a serious media player in the UK.

Desmond is believed to have spoken about acquiring a number of radio stations, including Kelvin MacKenzie's Wireless Group, which owns TalkSport, and more recently London News Radio, which owns News Direct and LBC.
