Desmond, whose Daily Express title recently ran an article castigating rival Daily Mail's price increase, is upping the cover price of the Daily Express by 5p. From Monday 4 October it will cost 45p in England and Ireland.
Back in 2008, Desmond's Daily Express accused the Daily Mail of hypocrisy when it increased its cover price while publishing stories about the effect of rising living costs on British families.
In Scotland, the cover price of the Daily Express will also rise by 5p to 25p.
The title's mid-market rival Daily Mail, whose circulation of 2.2 million dwarves that of the Daily Express' 671,000, remains priced at 50p per copy.
The increase means the Daily Express will cost the same as the Daily Mirror in London. The Sun is currently priced at 20p in London.
The Sunday Express will also go up by 5p to £1.35 from 10 October.
Next week, Desmond intends to lift the cover price of the Daily Star, a title which in terms of circulation performance has been a rare bright spark of late across the national newspaper market.
The title's cover price will increase by 10p and will now cost 20p from 4 October across Greater London, an area which has previously benefitted from price discounting.
Across the rest of the country, the Daily Star will go up from 20p to 30p in Scotland, Anglia and Meridian, and from 20p to 25p in Granada, Tyne Tees and Yorkshire.
The circulation of the Daily Star is at the 860,000 mark after a period of sustained growth but it still lags behind the circulation of The Sun's three million and the Daily Mirror's 1.2 million.
The Saturday issue of the Star will also increase by 10p to 50p.
