Desmond gears up for PM debut

Richard Desmond's free London evening paper, PM, is preparing for an autumn launch, irrespective of whether the Office of Fair Trading rules on its investigation into distribution of free newspapers at train and Tube stations in the meantime.

The OFT launched its investigation last May following complaints by Desmond that Associated Newspapers' exclusive contracts with London Underground and mainline train stations to distribute its free Metro paper are anti-competitive.

Desmond has had to put the launch of PM on hold but he is now believed to have lost patience with the length of the investigation.

Associated is expected to bring out a spoiler to counter PM, or launch an evening edition of Metro.
