Department of Education to pour £1m into new web site

The Department of Education and Skills is investing some £1 million to revamp and promote its Parents Online initiative.

The site (www.parentsonline. gov.uk), which aims to help parents understand the internet's educational benefits, launched three years ago. The revamped version, which goes live on 2 June, will offer more personalised navigation and content, and sections for all five key stages of the curriculum.

The web site will continue to host 'cyber journeys', which guide parents through relevant areas on topics such as the mysteries of ancient Egypt, along with information on holding and attending offline events and online community forums.

Marketing agency big:group has been appointed to revamp and promote the site. The online work has been handled by the firm's digital division, big:interactive, which also created the original site and built a content-management system last year to allow the DfES to add and modify content in-house.

"The Parents Online branding will remain the same, but we are adding new functionality to the Parents Online web site," said Jolyon Hogarth-Scott, managing director of big:interactive.

The DfES aims to drive parents to the site via a 38-week offline campaign.

Press ads will change weekly to reflect different content on the site.

The off-line work is by big:media, big:pr and big:production.
