Dennis picks internal candidate as new chief executive

LONDON – Dennis Publishing has promoted James Tye to chief executive, with the post's current occupier Alistair Ramsay due to move upstairs as a non-executive director in January.

Tye has been the managing director of Dennis' computer and gambling division since 2003. He joined Dennis in 1992 on the editorial side, rising to editor of PC Pro before switching to publisher of the same magazine in 1998. He was appointed to the Dennis board in 2000 by Ramsay.

Tye said he was immensely proud to take on the role at a company where he has spent most of his working life.

Owner Felix Dennis said that Tye was the stand-out candidate among eight candidates interviewed, and that he had been helped in making the appointment by the advice of a friend who is the ex-CEO of a rival publisher.

"He suggested that any external candidate 'had better be 25% better than an internal candidate because you know the former, warts and all, while his rival is wreathed in smoke and mirrors'," Dennis said.

Ramsay has been at Dennis for 21 years, and has spent 13 of them as managing director or chief executive.

He accepted the invitation to remain with the company as a non-executive director, extended by Felix Dennis, who said the company owed Ramsay a "huge debt of gratitude".

"All but three of our 21 titles and online portals were launched or acquired under Al's stewardship. Every director, senior manager and editor, bar one, was appointed by him. In a way, this company is more Alistair's than it is mine and I am delighted that he has consented to remain as a non-executive director," Dennis said.
