Dennis gaming site introduces charges

Dennis Publishing's new-media arm, Dennis Interactive, is to charge for content for the first time, on gaming portal www.computerandvideogames.com.

Access to the increased bandwidth service will cost £1 per week. It will offer downloads at up to 25 times faster than the average 10k per second speed.

The service will be offered alongside the portal's existing free offering of downloadable games demos and trailers.

Users can pay for the service via a premium-rate SMS number, which gives them a password to use on the portal, or a credit or debit card using Barclays Bank.

Computerandvideogames.com comprises the web site of magazine PC Zone (www.pczone.co.uk), gaming tips property cheat station.com and gaming world ranking league site csports.net.

Dennis Interactive is looking to roll out the charging service to csports.net to allow users to set up their own private league tables for a monthly fee.

The initiative could also be extended to Dennis Interactive's other magazine-based portals, which cover the IT, lifestyle and automotive sectors. These include web sites such as maxim-magazine.co.uk, pcpro.co.uk and autoexpress.co.uk.

Guy Sneesby, managing director of Dennis Interactive, said: "I don't think it is possible to charge for content at the article level, but it is possible to charge at the service level."
