Downey will be reporting to James Burnay, deputy managing director of Dennis' fitness and motoring divisions.

He takes over from Burnay as the hands-on publisher of the two fitness titles, allowing Burnay to focus on publishing Auto Express and autoexpress.co.uk and heading up Dennis Publishing's international licensing and syndication business.

Downey has moved continents to take up the post. For the past 18 months he worked as publishing director of Dennis Media Transasia India, based in Delhi where he launched Sports Illustrated India and a digital platform, knowyourmobile.in.

The publisher said: "Fitness has always been a subject I have held a strong interest in and the opportunity to develop Men's Fitness and Health & Fitness is a very exciting one indeed.

"As with all brands, revenue generation will be one of my primary focuses, but I will also be looking to work closely with the superb editorial teams I have inherited to make the products better, more useful and more successful."

Downey's 12-year career at Dennis Publishing began when he joined in 1998 as a sales executive on the former Dennis title Computer Buyer.

He has since published a variety of magazines including Poker Player, Viz and Monkey.
