Awdry becomes O&M's sixth creative partner. He will work alongside Dennis Lewis, Richard Russell, Neil Dawson, Greg Burke and Alasdair Graham, and report to the executive creative director, Malcolm Poynton.
Awdry joins O&M at the end of June and will take charge of the global Dove creative team. He will develop the "real beauty" campaign, which uses "real" women instead of models. Unilever is keen to make the campaign more coherent on an international basis.
Awdry spent three years at DDB, where he worked across international accounts including Knorr, Dell, Philips and Nestle Purina. He also worked on the Training and Development Agency for Schools' UK business.
Awdry began his advertising career in 1983 as an account trainee at Publicis.
After two years, he joined Bartle Bogle Hegarty as a creative. He has also worked at Leagas Delaney and Partners BDDH.
Awdry said: "Dove has pioneered an extraordinary voice in a homogenised world of category cliche. It has been a great start and there's a lot to build on."
Poynton added: "We're looking to make Dove even more famous in ways as yet unimagined. There are few people who can take us there creatively. In Will, we have a rare talent with a unique breadth of experience."
