Day Of The Triffids scheduled for BBC makeover

LONDON - The BBC is to resurrect another classic drama and remake John Wyndham's post-apocalyptic novel 'The Day Of The Triffids'.

The two part 90-minute modern drama will be produced by Power to transmit in 2009 on BBC One.

The BBC original broadcast a version of the 1951 science fiction classic in 1981, having previously made three adaptations for radio between the 1950s and 1960s.

'The Day Of The Triffids' joins 'Survivors' another post-apocalyptic drama revived by the BBC, having originally ran in 1975, and airing now on BBC One.

The remake is being adapted by Patrick Harbinson whose credits include 'ER' and 'Law & Order'. The BBC said he will "will create a fast paced, futuristic and electrifying take on John Wyndham's most penetrating novel".

The drama is set in 2011 after the depletion of the world's fossil fuel supply. In the hunt for alternative sources man uncovers the ominous Triffid, a crop now cultivated for its fuel that seems to have a life of its own.

When spectators gather globally for a much anticipated solar storm -- billions of awestruck victims are left blinded and the few sighted survivors watch as society falls apart and the Triffids break free and breed rapidly.

It is left to Dr Bill Masen to lead the battle against the Triffids and other less community minded survivors.

Julie Gardner, head of drama, BBC Wales, said: "The Day Of The Triffids is a classic title. I'm excited that its powerful story is being remade for television. We're hoping to attract a legion of fans as well as give nightmares to a new generation of viewers."

The trend for reviving classic shows of the 1970s and 1980s is alive and well elsewhere on British television as Sky One works on a remake of 1970s BBC sci-fi classic 'Blake's 7'.

The satellite broadcaster has ordered two 60-minute pilots, which if successful could turn into a six part series.

The broadcaster has said that 'Blake's 7' will not be a straight re-make, but a re-imagining along the lines of 'Battlestar Galactica', which was co-produced by Sky and is about to broadcast the final ten episodes in January.
