Davies defends BBC governors

LONDON - BBC chairman Gavyn Davies has vowed to fight any government plans to bring the public service broadcaster under the control of new super communications watchdog Ofcom, which will oversee the commercial sector.

Speaking to the Commons select committee this week, Davies told MPs that the BBC, as a public service broadcaster, should remain under the control of its governors, with intervention by the culture secretary if needed.

Davies' comments came in response to a change of mind by former culture secretary Chris Smith, who last week said he had had second thoughts about the regulation of the BBC since he wrote the current communications white paper when he was culture secretary.

Davies also revealed he is poised to make changes to the role of the BBC governors within the coming weeks.

Davies pledged he would defend the role of the BBC's governors when he took over as chairman from Sir Christopher Bland in September.

Control of the BBC also came under fire this week from Channel 4 managing director David Scott, who told the committee that leaving the BBC outside the powers of Ofcom would "only diminish the significance of broadcast content expertise as a central part of Ofcom's remit".
