In its trading update to the City yesterday (28 January, the media group, which also publishes the Sunday Sport, said it was confident that profitability would recover further this year.
However, it did not disclose specific financial details over its financial performance. SMG endured a tough 2009 as it battled with falling circulations at its two titles.
An earlier financial statement said circulations of the titles hit a "nadir" in March last year. Sales of the Daily Sport, which the publisher had revamped in a bid to lose its downmarket tag, were around 85,000 last August.
However, there are no audited figures for the period after the company resigned from the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) in March 2009.
Last year, the group also sold its lads' magazine Front and the rights to film magazine Hotdog to entertainment talent manager Francis Ridley. The sale of the titles, for £87,500, marked a retreat for SMG from the magazine business.
SMG also announced yesterday the appointment of William Robinson, chairman of finance group Braemar, as non-executive deputy chairman and Robert Johnson, an SMG executive, as executive director.
