Daily Mail rejects Queercompany's ads over content

The Daily Mail has refused to run three of Queercompany's four new press ads, describing them as too controversial.

The gay lifestyle web site launched a pounds 1m campaign last week, booking space in a number of diverse publications including Metro, Diva, The Independent Magazine, The Guardian, The Observer, Gay Times, Time Out, and the Daily Mail. The Daily Mail is the only title to have rejected the ads, created by marketing agency Anti-Corp.

Queercompany's chief operating officer Wanda Goldwag said the Mail accepted the execution showing two women holding hands alongside the caption 'No white wedding. Sorry mum', but refused the rest.

Goldwag said: 'When I said I thought some bigoted people might find the ads offensive (Marketing, November 9), I meant individual members of the public. It's just bizarre that a major national paper has taken this line.'

The Daily Mail's advertising director John Teal initially said it was an editorial decision to reject the ads, then later claimed: 'We will be running the one with the gay guys if we can negotiate the rate.'
