Czech government set to ban tobacco advertising

LONDON - The Czech Republic is set to ban tobacco advertising, with the government drawing up a draft bill to phase in the ban over several years.

There have been attempts in the past to bring in such a ban, but they have been opposed by the ad industry, worried about the loss in revenues.

The new law would ban all forms of tobacco advertising, including sponsorship. The law must now be passed by both the lower and upper houses of parliament, and signed by the president, Vaclav Havel. It is backed by the Christian Democrat party.

The EU is seeking to extend bans on tobacco advertising, by controlling the use of tobacco brand names on items such as ashtrays and umbrellas and banning the sale of cigarettes in packs of 10.
