LONDON - James Purnell, the secretary of state for culture, media and sport, is to head up the Department for Work and Pensions following the resignation of Peter Hain.

Purnell, a former BBC executive, has championed the advertising and commercial broadcasting sectors during his time at the DCMS. He is understood to have played a key role in forcing out restrictive ad regulations from the government's obesity strategy, which was released this week.
