Organisers announced the dance festival in Daresbury was closed for safety reasons after significant rainfall overnight on Saturday turned the site into a mudbath.

Producers Deadmau5 and Calvin Harris, and Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe, were set to perform on the closing day of the festival which ran from 24-26 August.

Yesterday, organiser Live Nation was trying to ensure the remainder of the 100,000 expected visitors left the site safely.

A statement on the Creamfields website yesterday called for patience and said refund information would soon be announced along with a detailed explanation as to why the site was abandoned.

The statement said: "Of course we know you are all disappointed, but please be assured that once it became clear that the condition of the event site presented a risk to those attending, your safety was our only concern. Everything that could be done to keep the festival running was, but eventually the conditions on site made it impossible.

"Assuming that today’s egress passes off without incident we can confirm that no serious injury was suffered during the event or evacuation of the site."
