LONDON - Budget airline Ryanair is to close all of its airport check-in desks over the coming months in an effort to cut costs.

A Ryanair spokesman confirmed that the airline is taking steps to move to 100% online check-in, although baggage handlers will continue to be found at bag drop desks.

The controversial decision by the Irish carrier will see another layer of face-to-face customer service removed. According to Ryanair 97% of passengers book flights online, while 75% check in online.

Last week Ryanair unveiled plans to offer in-flight mobile phone services on 20 of its aircraft, with plans to extend the service to its entire range of 170 plans. Vodafone and O2 network customers will be available immediately, while the airline is in talks with 3, Orange and T-Mobile.
